HTC One ME

HTC One ME Review – What started as a single device in the One range, HTC has got a lot of choices to offer to consumers today in its flagship series. The Taiwan-based company is currently offering at least 10 devices from the HTC One series but the takes the top spot is the recently announced HTC One ME.

HTC has always focused on the phone’s design and the One ME is a prime example of that. The phone is a visual treat that makes it as good looking as Apple’s iPhone 6 or Samsung’s Galaxy S6. Unlike the complete metal finish, HTC has gone with a two-tone finish on the One ME. The front side of the phone boasts metal finish whereas the back side features a polycarbonate shell and the end result is a beautiful, clean look. The phone is not slim by today’s standards but the phones sits well in the hand and with a curved back, it gives a good grip on the phone.

TWO-TONE BODY – Metal on the front, soft plastic at the back gives the phone a premium look

As far as placement goes, the loudspeaker is laid out on the top along with the a fingerprint sensor and front-facing camera whereas the power button, volume buttons and microSD card slot on the right hand side. The left hand side features the dual nano SIM card slots while the top and bottom sides feature an IR blaster and microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack respectively.

HTC One ME features a 5.2-inch display supporting WQHD resolution (1440×2560) with a pixel density of 565ppi (pixels per inch). The display quality is amazing and thanks to the high resolution, the images and text appear sharp and crisp. The phone also supports motion launch gestures that allows user to swipe or tap on the display to execute some commands.

MediaTek chips are often associated with mid-range devices so colour us surprised when HTC decided to use it for their flagship products. But given our experience with MediaTek’s helio X10 processor, we were more than happy with the overall performance. The helio X10 is an octa-core processor and coupled with 3GB RAM, the phone offered comparable performance to that of phones running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or Samsung’s Exynos chipsets. If synthetic benchmark is any indication, the phone scored well around 40000 points in Antutu benchmark.

The phone runs on Android Lollipop with Sense UI 7 on top. HTC’s customised user interface is more or less similar to the previous iterations but is smooth and lag free. Swiping on the left reveals BlinkFeed that updates world news, social updates in an eye pleasing manner.

Moving on to One ME’s multimedia prowess, the phone is capable of playing loads of multimedia files and enhancing the multimedia experience is HTC’s BoomSound dual front-facing speakers with Dolby Audio surround. The loudspeaker output is very good with no sign of distortion.

The camera on the One ME boasts a 20 megapixel sensor at the back and though the camera takes some really good pictures in outdoor lighting conditions, it’s a different case when you click pictures indoors. The images look sharp on the screen but the fully blown up picture talks a different story. There’s way too much noise in adequate lighting conditions. That said, taking pictures with the camera is fast with the camera booting up in a second and sports an easy to use interface.

It can capture up to 20 images continuously and allows to add more modes like Bokeh, Photo Booth and Split Capture. On the video front, the camera supports 4K video recording but is limited to 6 minutes only.

The UltraPixel camera on the front takes some good selfies and with the beauty mode support, users can clean up the selfie for a flawless skin in real time.

If we talk about its battery life, the 2840mAh battery gave us roughly 11 hours of usage on a single charge, which is considered average in today’s competition.

All said and done, the One ME is a competitive device and if you’re the one who doesn’t take too many photos indoors, the HTC One ME gives little reason to complain. The phone retails for $640.
