HTC Desire 816

HTC Desire 816 Review – The HTC One M8’s larger, cheaper sibling may not have the processing power or the looks, but it does offer a whole lot of value for money. Packing a 5.5-inch screen, this is a big phone with an affordable price tag. Build quality is solid but not premium, with the plastic back having a similar feel to Apple’s iPhone 5C. The 1280 x 720 resolution offers a pixel per inch count of 267, which is a little grainy, especially when viewing snaps and 1080p video taken on the 13-megapixel rear camera and five-meg front selfie-cam.

The 1.6GHz quadcore processor isn’t going to set the world alight, but is fine for day-to-day tasks, from web browsing to less-demanding games – alien shooter Edge of Tomorrow ran without a hitch. In fact, the big screen and front-facing BoomSound speakers really add to the experience. The newly pared-down HTC Sense 6.0, the same software found on the HTC One M8, also helps to keep everything running smoothly, keeping Blinkfeed and adding Hangouts, which collects all texts and instant messages, across multiple services, in one place.

If you’re prepared to forego top-end grunt and some of the One M8’s fancier camera features for affordability, you can’t go wrong with HTC’s latest budget blower. HTC Desire 816 is One of the finest smartphones in the “affordable” price bracket. Low on cost, but short on compromises.

The Desire 816 is pretty unique in its size and price point, which will serve it well. Even with that aside, it’s a very likeable phone that feels good in the hand and performs better than you might expect. The considerable dimensions might mean it performs better in other markets than the UK, but if you want a cheaper device with a huge screen, it is well worth consideration.
