Philips 55PFS6609

Philips 55PFS6609 Review – Philips has come out swinging this year, with a TV line sporting simplified picture processing and a design that stands out from the crowd; that white back panel and slim grey bezel really complement the TV’s Ambilight glow. Now, while Philips sets are renowned for requiring a fair amount of tweaking to achieve picture perfection, the PFS6009 makes it very easy to get the most of those 55 inches of hi-def screen.

We’d suggest turning sharpness down to one as a good start, then select the Standard image preset for the best black level performance. That done, you’ll enjoy less fidgety noise and plenty of shadow detail. This set is not a sporting legend, though. Motion handling, rated at 400Hz, is good but not medal-winning.

The various HD Natural Motion options on offer all produce much the same level of moving image clarity, differing only in the level of artefacting they create. Connectivity errs on the generous side, with four HDMIs, two USBs and built-in Wi-Fi for making use of Philips’ Smart TV platform. Its options are now competent, if still not brilliantly organised, with Netflix, Blinkbox, BBC News and Sport, BBC iPlayer, Spotify, YouTube, Viewster and Skype all included. All that’s missing is 4OD and ITV Player and we’d have a full set. There’s also a Cloud TV tab that opens European IPTV streaming services. None of it is essential viewing, but it’s a nice enough novelty.

Active 3D suffers from mild crosstalk and means you’ll have to splash out for extra specs if you’re inviting guests, as you only get two pairs here. With a Freeview HD tuner built in, there’s no direct need for a set-top box, unless you want subscription services. Attach a USB key – 4GB or over – and you can even timeshift without a box, pausing live TV and recording. This is a very good telly at a decent price, but you can get more web TV choice and a more user-friendly viewing experience elsewhere. An attractive and solid performer, but you can get a better web selection elsewhere
