ASUS RT-AC87U

ASUS RT-AC87U Review – ASUS has done it again with their latest dual-band router providing breakneck network speeds and plenty of features. ASUS are not newcomers in the network routers division as over the years they have constantly provided high performance routers to consumers. Lately, they have far from eased off from this trend with the release of their RT-AC87U Dual-Band Gigabit Router. Design-wise, the router has a stylish black theme with a design that looks like a cutting edge spacecraft. It comes with four detachable antennas, for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz band networking.

On the back panel, there are four RJ-45 LAN ports, one RJ-45 WAN port and a single USB 2.0 port as well as the power input and power button. On the front end of the device, the right side hides a flap which can be opened to reveal a single USB 3.0 port which can be used to connect directly to the cloud storage. Also located at the front are two buttons which are used to turn the Wi-Fi and LEDs on or off.

This device being a high-end router provides a long list of features such as iTunes and UPnP servers for media streaming, FTP and SAMBA servers for file sharing over the Internet or local network. It also uses the ASUS Smart Sync feature which allows you to attach your USB device and link it with ASUS AiCloud storage service.

It also has the adaptive quality of service feature (QoS) which recognises the type of client that connects to the router and assigns the network accordingly. It also sports boosted security with the AiProtection provided by Trend Micro which prevents network clients from being infected by malicious servers while also being able to provide basic parental control. While all these features add to the depth of usage, most users will most likely only benefit from one or two of these features. When it boils down to the performance, this router definitely matches its price in terms of speed and coverage.

One of the few things you should consider when using this router is the use of a client that supports the same features which can act as a wireless bridge. This can increase its performance at a drastic rate. It has a massive amount of coverage as we were able to receive signals even when we were blocked by two walls.

Another positive point from the router came from the USB storage read and write speed with the device. It managed to transfer files from the router to our workstation at over 60Mbps using a single 10GB file. Placed at a premium pricing, not all individuals will want to splash that kind of money on a router, but for those who knows what to look for, the ASUS RT-AC87U will definitely not be any less than what’s expected
